Hi Paul - what a brilliant tip to keep the 12 volt battery charged up for low use driving. This is exactly what our sales rep told us to do when picking up our new Yaris design last March by switching on the air con whilst in ready mode during park up period. By doing this method at least once a week keeps me out of battery trouble. Every Yaris driver should know this. Thanks Paul.

Hi, I have learnt so much from you about Yaris Hybrids. Watched and rewatched them. Thank you very much for making them. I have purchased a Yaris Cross Excel. It should be here before the end of August. I have read about the problems with the 12v battery. I am very concerned. I only drive about 70 miles or so a week at the moment. I travel to see my husband in a Nursing Home. My biggest worry is that the car won't start when I get a phone call from the Nursing Home about my husband having a fall. Which he does, quite a lot, unfortunately. So I contacted the Dealer about my worries and they said that they will provide me with a Ring RSP2000 20w Solar Powered Battery Maintainer. The Service Manager there said that it can be plugged into the Cigarette Lighter to charge. I would like your opinion as to whether it will send some charge to the small battery when the car is totally off. He said it will. I know you'll know. What do you think? Is it true? Of course I now know that I can do it your way too. Many thanks.

While it’s true that there are only a couple of relays to switch on the high voltage that need a certain minimum voltage, there is also the brake control unit that we can fall foul of if the low voltage is too low. We need to apply the footbrake a bit to be able to switch the power on. As you are probably aware, it’s a bit of built in interlocking to be able to switch the power on (even when it’s parked with the transmission in park mode). I think the hydraulic pump unit for the brakes runs at 12V, and when the snag arises, one of the first things that comes to light is when the brake feels a but weird when trying to switch the power on. Been there, done that, last winter. In my case, the 12V developed a fault with one of it’s cells failing, and ended up having a new one supplied by the dealer at no extra cost. Whether the dodgy cell was damaged by discharge, I don’t know, but it’s probably a bad idea to let them run down too often or for too long. The dealer who did the job did recommend the use of trickle charging by low use people. The dodgy cell was detected by a proper charger that I have for occasional use - a Black & Decker one for lead acids. Quite old, but similar products are no doubt still available. You’re right about using the air con to trigger the need for the engine to run. Alright, it uses high voltage, but soon it will draw enough current to force it to start the engine, with the surplus output going to the traction battery. Theoretically it’s supposed to be between 30% and 80% charge most of the time, but the 12V battery just gets topped up all the time when the power is on.

To much hard cheap plastic,cheap interior, under powered engine, should have a turbo ,also very thin metal door s,i did have a test ride, very expensive,price wise if you go for a top grade one your not that far away from Yaris range

Does the A/C switch actually need to be ON, or can the heat just be turned up as its the demand for heat that forces the engine start? My thinking here is that the A/C compressor also draws power out of the hybrid battery.

I have a question, hopefully you can help. I picked up my new 2024 yaris hybrid today(icon trim), they provide a tyre inflation kit, but, I cannot find a 12v outlet to use the inflator kit, what do I do if I get a flat? Is there a hidden 12v outlet? (used to be known as a cig lighter socket I guess). Some of your video's have been very helpful thus far, so I have subbed and turned on notifications. Thanks for all the valuable info so far....... :)

There is a downside to that, and is related to the internal AC evaporator: too frequent AC runs at full blast leads to premature leaks, particularly in Toyota's, and getting the evaporator fixed is a real pain (and expensive), as long as the entire dashboard must be dismantled.

Hello Paul, my new Toyota Yaris is 10 months old and has done around 600 miles. Because neither I or my wife drive very much I switch on the car once a week for 60 minutes. I have noted that the hybrid battery has never showed more than 5 bars and most of the time it shows 3 or 4 bars. I am seriously concerned that the hybrid battery is faulty. This afternoon I switched the car on for 40 minutes and the hybrid battery showed 3 bars for the entire duration; at no point did the petrol engine come on. Do you think I’ve got a faulty hybrid battery?

Compare it to one of those automatic LED radar signs that tell you your speed as you enter a village. For me they tend to agree with the satnav speed rather than speedo. Or drive past a copper with a speed gun and check your post for a few days…..

cars to my understanding have alwas been set to show a faster speed than what you are actually doing for safety

By the way I’m the new owner of the Toyota Yaris but the Icon model which I purchased from Premier Toyota in Llandudno Junction. Just starting on Hybrid’s so finding your videos very useful.
